Immediate function implants are implants that are loaded with temporary crowns immediately after they are placed. The criteria required for immediate function are: 1. 4 or more implants in the lower jaw that can be splinted together. 2. No major bone grafting needed. 3. No teeth or wearing a full denture on the upper jaw. Some implant practitioners call this procedure "teeth in a day", "instant teeth" ... whatever the name given, this procedure is challenging but also very rewarding to the patient. An example of such a procedure performed at our practice is as follows.
![]() ![]() This patient had 2 mobile lower canines to be extracted. We decided to use the extraction sockets to insert the first 2 implants, a challenging but rewarding strategy. 2 implants have been placed without cutting of the gums. We then proceeded backwards and placed 2 more implants, one on each side. The 4.5mm implants fit the extract very well.
![]() ![]() Once all 4 implants are in place, we place temporary crowns over them. The implant on the right canine socket was unstable, so we had to make an incision to graft the area.
![]() ![]() The patient was able to function immediately after surgery. Cost: S$12,000 (immediate payment required). Final PFM bridge an additional: S$3,600.
![]() ![]() 3 months later, all implants integrated successfully. They were loaded with a definitive porcelain fused to metal (PFM) bridge. |
